The Pulaski School district is out of control and here is another reason why. You can read the whole article but I thought I would take just one issue. Busing!
The wide territory means high school and middle school students living in the outskirts must be bused for miles each day. The district maintains its own bus line with 43 buses.
Lighter acknowledges spending several hours on a bus each day could be trying for children. Leaders have thought about adding wireless Internet access on buses so kids can do homework or communicate with others on the long trips.
The district also offers community nights or other activities for middle school students throughout the district, he said.
"Some of those kids live in rural areas and can be pretty isolated," Lightner said. "It's good for them to be able to come somewhere and play and have a good time, to socialize with their classmates."
First, it may be a big school district but the farthest students are away from Pulaski is twenty minutes. Isolated students, is he kidding? Can he name some students that spend 2 or more hours on one of his buses? Again is he kidding? Wireless internet on the buses, sure so kids can text or e mail a student siting next to each other on the bus ? Somebody help me here, is he kidding?
Do you know how big the Suring School District is and how far north they go to pick up students?
Second, they have 43 buses they own. That's cost of purchasing and maintenance of 43 buses. Also throw in union bus drivers, pay union wages and pay union benefits. Who's paying for this? Oh I forgot, Lightner spent $90,000 last year to buy a payloader to plow snow. That added union employees and benefits to plow the school lots. Wouldn't it be cheaper to have private business plow snow?
Some of his students are isolated? "Have a good time, to socialize with their classmates." he says. What is this, a social experiment or a place of higher learning?
This is just one part of the insanity going on in the Pulaski Community School district. The tax payers are on the hook for the health club in the school , district owned union driver buses, I pods, high paid teachers and all the other wasteful spending going on in the district. And now they are doing social experimenting with gender-specific classes for some sixth-graders.
For those looking at this from the outside, things can be deceiving. I do not live in the district but did in the past and seen first hand of the waste going on in the district. There does not seem to be a lot of tax payers up in arms about their school taxes going up every year to pay for social engineering, a health club in the school, teachers in day care centers and especially the fat cat high paid teachers driving around Pulaski in their Toyota Prius with Obama stickers on the bumper.
It will be interesting in the coming years to see how the district will pay for their Taj Mahal school district after Scott Walker starts reining in spending.
Will the tax payers stand up or just bend ...... and take it?
