"China blasts US tire duties as protectionist blow
Sat Sep 12, 2009 2:35pm EDT
By Chris Buckley and Doug Palmer
BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China decried a U.S. decision to impose added duty on Chinese-made tires, saying the move sent a dangerous protectionist signal before a G20 summit and could stoke reactions impeding global recovery.
But the White House played down the dispute, saying it was simply "enforcing the rules of the road" and did not expect the matter to escalate into a trade war." China blasts US tire duties as protectionist blow | Reuters
"Jeff Mapps, 29, a stagehand and labor union member from South Philadelphia, left home about 6 a.m. to come to the protest. He said he hadn't been involved in previous Tea Party demonstrations, but he watches Fox News host Glenn Beck "all the time" and he wanted to be a part of something he thinks will be historic. Beck has been drumming up support for the march.
Holding a sign that said "Preserve, Protect, Defend" on a Red Line Metro train packed with conservative activists, Mapps fretted over a "blatant disregard for the Constitution." " Anti-Government Demonstration Draws Tens of Thousands to D.C.

When organizers for the Taxpayer March on Washington said they expected tens of thousands of people Saturday, they weren't kidding.
Tea Party protestors completely blocked Pennsylvania Ave. from 14th Street, NW, to the U.S. Capitol. The crowds were so dense that organizers for the event decided to start the speeches and march earlier than the scheduled 11:30 a.m. time.

In splitting with ACORN, Groves sought to tamp down GOP concerns and negative publicity that the partnership will taint the 2010 head count. " Census Bureau severs ties with ACORN in 2010 count

ObamaCare and Forced Unionization
"In the heated debates on health-care reform, not enough attention is being paid to the huge financial windfalls ObamaCare will dole out to unions—or to the provisions in the various bills in Congress that will help bring about the forced unionization of the health-care industry.
" Marquette Warrior
Tucked away in thousands of pages of complex new rules, regulations and mandates are special privileges and giveaways that could have devastating consequences for the health-care sector and the American economy at large.
The Senate version opens the door to implement forced unionization schemes pursued by former Govs. Rod Blagojevich of Illinois in 2005 and Gray Davis of California in 1999. Both men repaid tremendous political debts to Andy Stern and his Service Employees International Union (SEIU) by reclassifying state-reimbursed in-home health-care (and child-care) contractors as state employees—and forcing them to pay union dues.
The current House version of ObamaCare (H.R. 3200) goes much further. Section 225(A) grants Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius tremendous discretionary authority to regulate health-care workers “under the public health insurance option.” Monopoly bargaining and compulsory union dues may quickly become a required standard resulting in potentially hundreds of thousands of doctors and nurses across the country being forced into unions.
The House bill has a $10 billion provision to bail out insolvent union health-care plans. It also creates a lucrative professional-development grant program for health-care workers that effectively blackballs nonunion medical facilities from participation. The training funds in this program must be administered jointly with a labor organization—a scenario not unlike the U.S. Department of Labor’s grants for construction apprenticeship programs, which have turned into a cash cow for construction industry union officials on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
There’s more. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus has suggested that the federal government could pay for health-care reform by taxing American workers’ existing health-care benefits—but he would exempt union-negotiated health-care plans. Under Mr. Baucus’s scheme, the government could impose costs of up to $20,000 per employee on nonunion businesses already struggling to afford health care plans.
Americans are unlikely to support granting unions more power than they already have in the health-care field. History shows union bosses could abuse their power to shut down medical facilities with sick-outs and strikes; force doctors, nurses and in-home care providers to abandon their patients; dictate terms and conditions of employment; and impose a failed, Detroit-style management model on the entire health-care field.

The eighth-anniversary memorial ceremony at Ground Zero will include a reading by Vice President Joe Biden, accompanied by a long list of local elected officials.
In addition, each of the 115 Sept. 11 relatives expected to attend will be paired with a local volunteer to read off the names of those who perished.
Other remembrances are planned around the region, but Ground Zero will be the focal point for the families who -- for the first time -- will be let on the partially constructed Memorial Plaza.
Bagpipers and drummers will open the invitation-only get-together at 8:40 a.m., and Mayor Bloomberg will call for a moment of silence as church bells toll citywide at 8:46 a.m. -- the time the first airliner hit the north tower.
Other moments of silence will be observed at 9:03 a.m. -- the time the second airliner hit the south tower -- and at 9:59 and 10:29 a.m., to mark the towers' collapse.
The televised ceremony will be held in Zuccotti Park, across Church Street from the World Trade Center site.
As for the annual Tribute in Light, the two massive beams will return, recreating the towers' image, from sunset, about 7:11 p.m., to dawn.

"Pittsfield referendum on exceeding levy limit set for Tuesday
September 10, 2009
PITTSFIELD — Township voters will decide Tuesday whether to increase the levy beyond the state-imposed cap for ongoing road maintenance and construction needs.
The special referendum asks voters to decide whether the town should be allowed to exceed this limit for the next fiscal year and on an ongoing basis by a total of 38 percent or about $200,000 to pay for road repairs and construction.
At its annual meeting this spring, the town approved a motion to put the question on a special referendum in the fall.
The levy limit of 3 percent set by the state has restricted the town’s efforts to address its roads, said town chairman Keith Deneys. The town budgeted $66,000 in 2009 for road construction and borrowed $132,000 to cover the cost of resurfacing Brookside Drive, an arterial street that needed repair.

"Editorial: We need reform on health care, not party bickeringSo the Green Bay Press doesn't want party bickering?
September 9, 2009
As President Barack Obama addresses a rare joint session of Congress tonight, much is riding on this speech for a nation frustrated over health-care reform." Editorial: We need reform on health care, not party bickering | greenbaypressgazette.com | Green Bay Press-Gazette
In Northeastern Wisconsin, we look to U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, to work with Republicans to find common ground. As he said in Sunday’s Green Bay Press-Gazette, “Today's skyrocketing costs for health care are unsustainable.” We expect him to work in a bipartisan fashion to help bring those costs down.So why are they telling Steve Kagen to work with republicans?
In his column, Kagen wrote: “We need reforms that guarantee if you're sick or lose your job, you can keep your health coverage. If you have health insurance, it should not cost you a fortune — and certainly not more than the mortgage payments for your home. And insurance corporations should no longer be allowed to take your money and not give it back.”So in his article, did Steve Kagen say that he would work with republicans?
Some of Kagen’s critics complain that even after hearing sharp complaints about the pending legislation in Congress, he hasn’t changed his tune. It’s true: Kagen continues to talk about the ideas he advocated when he first ran in 2006, when he was re-elected in 2008, and in the months he has served in Congress in between. Whether you like his message or not, Kagen has been consistent all along, and Northeastern Wisconsin has now elected him twice based on that message.
Instead of finding fault with the other side — which is what most of the debating has been about — lawmakers need to reach consensus. And Kagen needs to be willing to compromise. So lawmakers (republicans only) need to reach consensus? So, Steve Kegan will not reach across the aisle? So, the Green Bay Press will not blame Steve Kagen? So, the GBP will blame the republicans? So, what else is new?
Too late for Obama to turn it around?
By Camille Paglia
"Why did it take so long for Democrats to realize that this year's tea party and town hall uprisings were a genuine barometer of widespread public discontent and not simply a staged scenario by kooks and conspirators? First of all, too many political analysts still think that network and cable TV chat shows are the central forums of national debate. But the truly transformative political energy is coming from talk radio and the Web -- both of which Democrat-sponsored proposals have threatened to stifle, in defiance of freedom of speech guarantees in the Bill of Rights. I rarely watch TV anymore except for cooking shows, history and science documentaries, old movies and football. Hence I was blissfully free from the retching overkill that followed the deaths of Michael Jackson and Ted Kennedy -- I never saw a single minute of any of it. It was on talk radio, which I have resumed monitoring around the clock because of the healthcare fiasco, that I heard the passionate voices of callers coming directly from the town hall meetings. Hence I was alerted to the depth and intensity of national sentiment long before others who were simply watching staged, manipulated TV shows. " Too late for Obama to turn it around? | Salon
