The bird is back!

Doc’s Harley-Davidson of Shawano County says their rare plum-headed parakeet named Rainbow was returned Wednes-day morning, after it was reportedly stolen on Saturday.

“We received a couple tips from people that said they had seen the bird, and now we have him back,” said store manager Kersten Heling. “This morning I was just starting to think that enough time had passed that we wouldn’t get him back, but then we got the phone call.”

Store owner Steve “Doc” Hopkins said that a man named Henry Salazar, a volunteer at the American Indian Center in Appleton, saw another man come into the center Tuesday afternoon with the bird on his shoulder. Shortly afterward, Salazar saw a media report that said the bird was missing.

“He knew the man who came into the center. Henry called him, and said he had to get the bird back. Henry offered to bring the bird back to us,” Hopkins said.

Salazar received a reward of $250 for the return of the bird.

Hopkins said Salazar didn’t know if the man who returned the bird was connected in any way to its disappearance.

“Henry was overjoyed that he received the money for bringing the bird back. I’m sure neither one had anything to do with this,” Hopkins said.

Although Hopkins said he doesn’t plan to pursue charges against the suspect, the incident is under review by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

“They know who this (suspect) is. She’s on probation,” he said. “I’m not pursuing anything on my end. We don’t have concrete proof, but they were the only two people in the store.”

Hopkins said he’s very happy the bird is back.

“All the girls here were happy to have him back too. He came in and saw all of us. You couldn’t shut him up — he was overjoyed

to be back,” said Hopkins. “It’s like harmony was returned.”"
