December 7, 2010
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard said it has started ice-breaking operations in the western Great Lakes area in response to colder temperatures.
The Coast Guard's office in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., said the effort started Monday afternoon.
It said ice breaking now is under way in Lake Superior, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac and northern Lake Huron.
