"Moose spotted in area, hunters being asked to protect it
Conservation wardens and DNA wildlife managers are confirming a moose has been spotted in southwestern Shawano County.
A young bull moose was photographed as it enjoyed eating cattails in the pond of a landowner near Wittenberg.
Moose generally are not seen south of Highway 8, so a confirmed sighting south of Highway 29 near Wittenberg has folks talking and scratching their heads.
Moose are a protected animal in Wisconsin. Unlawfully hunting or shooting a moose carries a costly forfeiture of not less than $1,000 nor more than $2,0-00 and a mandatory revocation of all hunting privileges for up to five years.
“If we have a moose in the area, we want to make sure that hunters know about him and do our best to protect him during this fall hunting season,” said Jean Romback-Bartels, land leader for the DNA’s Northeast Region." Shawano Leader
