Today was the Appleton taxpayer rally at the Greenville Lions Park in Grenville. Let me say it was worth the trip from the bunker in the 8th district.

Wow, a lot of good people showing their anger at Madison and Washington DC.

They just kept coming and coming.

What GREAT Americans.

This is at 3:15. The rally still didn't start but the cars were still driving in.

Looks like a tea party to me.

Grab a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy.

We all know there are a lot of similarities but what do republicans and democrats have in common? Their both always late for rallies, news conferences and special function. O k, It's 3:30 and time for the show to begin 30 min. late.

That's according to a survey conducted of IT professionals by the Madison-based Wisconsin Technology Council, in partnership with WisBusiness .com and the Lumis Group, a Madison-based marketing company.

Between June 23 and July 6, 277 technology companies were surveyed, and 45 percent believed the state's economy will improve during the next year. Nearly 19 percent said the economy will get worse, while 36 percent believed economic conditions would remain the same." As the recession kicked into high gear at the end of 2008, some of the state's business leaders believed more could be done at the state level to lessen its impact on Wisconsin.

That quickly led to the formation of the Wisconsin Business Council, which organizers say is a nonpartisan approach to influencing public policy. Group leaders say they are not a political lobbying group but instead want to serve more as a consultant to the state's policy makers. How is this not a lobby group? Voters of Wisconsin, First look at the people running the show. Someone running ATT, a lawyer and Phillip Prange, isn't he a a prominent Wisconsin lobbyist and political fund-raiser? Seems a little bit like a certain girl and a wolf.

Some representatives of the WBC, including Scott VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin and chairman of WBC's board, Phillip Prange, president and chief executive officer of WBC, and Patrick Farley, an attorney with the law firm of Axley Brynelsen LLP in Brookfield, secretary and general counsel of WBC, recently visited with Gannett Wisconsin Media. Here's an excerpt from that conversation:

Q. What led to the formation of this organization?

A. Phllip: The whole world is dealing with a recession and it wasn't just affecting the business community. We started talking about this at the end of 2008. We felt we needed a new nonpartisan approach to reach out in a collaborative fashion not just to businesses but to the legislature and executive branches of government and to academia and the intellectual community in general to build a consensus to develop real solutions to problems facing all of us. From those solutions, we will determine policy that will improve the quality of life as well as the business climate in the state. That's the genesis of how we got going.

Notice how that word nonpartisan is used. It sounds so nice. Can't we all get along. Then he uses the word we, "we will determine policy", Well it's to their advantage to buy off politicians.

Q. If your plan is to influence policy, won't you have to officially declare yourself a lobbying organization?

A. Prange: We are not political. We do not intend to establish a political action committee. We will advocate. It's not our intent to influence political campaigns.

Hey Phillip, you just said, "we will determine policy", come on Press Gazette, are you blind or in the pocket of this group?

VanderSanden: What this organization brings is an opportunity to work across party lines and to work with groups who have not been invited to policy discussions in the past. It's our goal to add their thoughts to the framework to build policy that we feel will make Wisconsin a better place to do business and improve the overall quality of life.

Work across party lines means "work with dems and RINO's"!

We want to put a balance out there so at the end of the day, all sides feel they win enough to make everyone happy. I think we can do that with this bipartisan effort. Instead of forcing people to come to the table, we want them to come willingly and offer their thoughts. It's not our plan to just have board meetings and come up with an agenda. We have an organization now that I think if we do our job well, ideally, I would hope policy makers would look to us for our thoughts and guidance when they have to make tough choices and not just turn to certain groups who they've always turned to.

Catch that, "all sides feel they win enough", they are talking about your money (tax dollars) and what they want is enough to make them happy. They want the cash cow.



No wonder the cow is in the Wisconsin quarter.

Q. There are other business organizations such as Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce that also is working to improve the state's business climate. How are you different?

A. VanderSanden: We are going to try very hard to involve people in discussions who have not been invited to the table before. We think other people may have good ideas that would help improve the overall quality of life and business climate in the state. We believe WMC would be a complementary organization to us and we would be to them.

Oh yea, involve people that want to get a piece of the state pie. They want to get the real small business owners to pony up money for their gain. You know kind of like protection money.

Prange: The state needs people pulling in the same direction right now. We have a great university system, good technical college system and an outstanding K-12 system. We have great things to build on, yet we are facing a tough economic climate. In order to get through that, we need to work together.

Notice he only mentions tax payer funded entities "great university system, good technical college system and an outstanding K-12 system". Where are the average small business owner? They are not invited.

Farley: I think you have to have a broad look at the whole picture. The advantage of bringing business people together with the academic community and think tanks is you make the connections that we're all in this together. We're not just looking at one slice, but the whole pie. Our approach, we believe is that we want WMC and the National Federation of Independent Business at the table with us. We're stepping outside the silo and looking at it from a horizontal perspective.

At least they're honest. They want the whole thing . He even said he wants the whole pie. I like pumpkin myself.

Q. What are your immediate goals?

A. VanderSanden: There are four basic areas we feel need to be addressed: regulatory and tax, training and education, economic development and infrastructure. Within those four buckets, we have to look at what are the right ways to advance those four objectives while finding a balancing act for business and maintaining what is important to the people of Wisconsin. I think other groups are addressing one piece or another. If you pull the lever on taxes, for example, it shifts three or four other things and then other debates get ignored. We feel there is another way to approach things and do it right.

Got to give em credit.

Regulatory and tax - we give politicians money they stay off our backs. Tax the little businesses and leave us big guys alone or give us tax breaks and state grants in return.

Training and education - going to bat for the teachers union. Don't you just love it. We need more teachers! Who cares about property taxes anyway.

Economic development - code word for free money, grants, free stimulus money or low interest gov. backed loans that some day they don't have to pay back.

Infrastructure - oh yea, gov owned high speed rail, high speed internet to everyone (the guy from ATT loves that one), wind mill farms, and let's not forget the ethanol lobby.

Q. So what do you tackle first?

A. VanderSanden: Right now, our goal is to make sure the public knows we're out there. Then we want to get a group of advisers together and sit down with them, pick their brains, and determine a couple areas of focus in the next six months to a year.

See get ready for the 2010 election. Those sly devils.

Prange: When you look at the economy, yes we need a nonpartisan approach to that. Now that we have the organization, we have to bring the people together. Then we have to determine how we will implement. Our hope is to have round tables, bring in leaders from the academic world and invite others to participate. We welcome change and want winning ideas to help move the state forward.

I guess when it comes to money in their pocket, nonpartisan money is as good as the rest. There he goes again with code words again, "round table" we like fancy hotel meeting rooms, "academic", teachers unions, lefty think tanks, etc. , etc.. Look he even said "and invite others", he really didn't mean it. You small business owners are not welcome, most of them are right wing conservatives anyway, they'll just slow us down and get in the way. For God sakes, did he have to use the word "CHANGE" I'm am sick and tired of hope and "change"!

VanderSanden: We hope by the fall, we'll have a more defined agenda on what we will try to tackle first. We have several people on board now who are looking for an opportunity to have a voice in Wisconsin.

They have no agenda yet? Why did they form this group if they don't have a agenda? They lied to the P G, they have a agenda. Their agenda is to keep all democrats and RINO's in office, to keep the state off their backs and to keep their pockets full of state tax money. YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!! It would be nice if some MSM report's the real stories behind their news. The Green Bay Press even gave a good sub headline "Wisconsin Business Council hopes to influence policy", but then fell asleep through the whole article. They gave em a pass!

Get ready people, next years election will be down and dirty and looks like the lobby groups and left leaning politicians are gearing up early. People of Wisconsin, politicians and groups like this are playing with your money and this is what you can expect.



Don't believe everything you read and hear. Remember the old saying. "FOLLOW THE MONEY!" Wake up and "FOLLOW YOUR MONEY!"

Wisconsin's U.S. senators said they appreciated the Obama administration's outreach to rural areas today, but encouraged Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to do more to alleviate the recession's impact on dairy farmers.

In a letter to the USDA issued Wednesday, Sens. Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl asked Vilsack to increase the purchase price for products under the federal Dairy Price Support program. Vilsack, along with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Gov. Jim Doyle, visited the La Crosse area today as part of the adminsitration's "rural tour."

"During January and April this year, the U.S. all-milk price has averaged $4.80 per cwt. below the U.S. average cash cost of production," the letter states. "A meaningful but temporary increase in the Dairy Price Support program will being to restore farm level prices and help restore producers' ability to produce basic cash flow for their operations during these difficult financial times."

A federal loan guarantee program has secured much-needed financing for two regional companies that will help maintain a full work force and operations at its Gillett plant.

Verrette Materials Inc. and Champion Co. of Iron Mountain, Mich., owners of Gillett Cement Products, have received a $4.1 million loan for debt refinancing and permanent working capital.

The loan was made by Heartland Business Bank of De Pere and is guaranteed through the Business & Industry Guaranteed Loan program of the USDA’s Rural Development office.

Verrette Materials is a ready-mix concrete manufacturer with six plants located in Northeast Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Champion is involved in construction services, production of sand, gravel and readymix concrete. The company is known for onsite concrete supply to construction projects such as electrical generating plants, petrochemical plants, dams, nuclear power plants, paper and forest industries, mining and auto assembly plants across the United States.

Dan Wentarmini of Gillett Cement Products said the loan would help ensure the company’s fleet of 32 trucks will be able to stay in operation and stave off wage freezes, cutbacks or other measures that might otherwise have been necessary.

The Gillett operations employ 45 to 50 people, Wentarmini said.

The company maxed out its line of credit last year and sought additional financing to maintain its fleet, he said.

Jeff Hudson, business loan specialist with the Rural Development office, said the federal guarantee provides additional incentives to provide financing in the currently tight economic conditions.

U.S. Rep Steve Kagen welcomed the news of the loan, which he said would save as many as 50 jobs."

Fire investigators have determined that a military flare shot onto the roof of the Patrick Cudahy meat-packing plant last week sparked the fire that lasted nearly three days, left employees out of work and forced the evacuation of nearby residents.

The Cudahy Police Department, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Wisconsin State Fire Marshal have announced a reward of up to $16,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the July 5th fire.

The reward is being funded by ATF, the Wisconsin Arson Insurance Counsel and Southern Milwaukee Crime Stoppers, according to Cudahy police.

Police reported that the flare was fired from the east of the plant on the evening of July 5th.

Investigators are seeking the public's help to apprehend and convict the person or persons responsible.

This should make the people of Northern Wis feel really good. Couple of questions for Congressman Kagen.

Why Appleton, what about Rhinelander, Eagle River, Crandon, Leona, Maybe Antigo. Isn't that the heart of the forest industry? You have to have a hearing in the city and the farthest point from the north woods in the 8th district? Why Mr. Kagen?

Is Steve Kagen embarrassed to take his pal from California to meet the people of the north woods?

Would Mr Baca only stay at a posh hotel in Appleton? Aren't the hotels in northern Wisconsin good enough?

Do people working in the forest industry have to drive to Appleton to be heard? Is Congressman Kagen making it inconvenient for the people to get to the public hearing?

Does Congressman Kagen really care about the voters of the north woods or is this just a dog and pony show for him to use for his re election spots in 2010?

Congressman Kagen, this is a disgrace to the people of northern Wisconsin. You obviously show no respect for the hard working people of the 8th district.

Nothing like dumping on the people of his district and taking them for fools!

Stimulus Bill, $3508 For A Family Of Four

"City Of Marinette Awarded $9,437,500 Stimulus Grant
The City of Marinette has been awarded a $9,437,500 stimulus grant for the construction of its new Water Plant/Raw Water Line project. Marinette has also been awarded a low interest Safe Drinking Water Loan to cover the remaining cost of the project. Announcement was made in a news conference on Wednesday morning, July 8 at the Marinette Waterworks Plant.

This stimulus grant was awarded by the Wisconsin DNR and Department of Administration which administered the stimulus grant pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The low interest loan (2.67%) was awarded through the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program.

A total of $37,750,000 of stimulus grants for water projects was awarded in Wisconsin, with Marinette receiving the largest single stimulus grant for a water project. The next closest was the Village of Sherwood which got $2,169,150.

Mayor Robert Harbick, Water Utility Commissioner Paul Gustafson and Water Utility Commissioner Tim Peterson express their appreciation to the DNR for their efforts in awarding the large grant. The money will help make the project more affordable for the rate payers of the City of Marinette. Peterson said it will create 20 federal jobs over a two year period.

Construction is expected to start in September, Mayor Harbick added. The land has already been purchased.

This grant award would not have been possible without the efforts of Dean Freeberg of Mead & Hunt, the engineering firm hired by the Marinette Water Utility to design the new water plant and raw water line. Freeberg, working in conjunction with Peterson and other city officials, submitted this and other grant requests related to the project.

Mayor Harbick, since his election is 2006, has made the replacement of the City’s water plants, parts of which are over 100 years old, his number one priority. He said he is thrilled that the award of this stimulus grant and low interest loan will help make the project a reality.

What could the avg family of four in Marinette do with $3508 ( $877 per every man, women and child) that they are spending from the stimulus bill from this past February? O K, maybe they need a Water Plant/Raw Water Line project, what ever that is, but do they need it now?

I would say if a family could spend $3500 they would do more for the local economy and eventually the city could build a new Water Plant/Raw Water Line.

I hope the people of Marinette thank Steve Kagen for all the jobs that will be created in the Marinette area. Maybe a lot of jobs come from Michigan across the river? Then the people of Wisconsin can thank Bart Stupak for jobs in Michigan.

Speaking of Michigan, the companies that get the contracts to build this, will they be from Wisconsin or Michigan.

It would be nice for the MSM to look into this or is the city of Marinette in it to fill their pockets first?

So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lot and found six ‘Obama’ bumper stickers on our employees’ cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They voted for change, I gave it to them.

That boosts each member's annual pay to $49,943. On top of that, each lawmaker receives an average of $11,500 in daily allowances for expenses each year. They also are reimbursed for mileage to and from the Capitol if they live outside Dane County."

That's an extra $2530, $11,500 in daily allowances and mileage. Does your company give you allowances and pay mileage to and from work?

Also if Dave and his staff do not work everyday of the year, it sounds like extra days off. How sweet. Do you get that. Wisconsin politicians even admit they're working only part time to boot? Sweet. Did anyone ever ask Dave Hansen how many days a year he really works. MSM, do your job here.

So to all the people who lost jobs, out of work and are struggling, Dave Hansen is saying one thing and getting something else.

Where is the MSM on calling Dave Hansen and his hypocrisy. And he said " he and his staff are taking 16 days off without pay." YEA RIGHT!

If it’s summer in Wisconsin, it just wouldn’t be the same without those pesky mosquitoes.

The Wolf River Region hasn’t yet been inundated due to the lack of rainfall, but it doesn’t take much to turn that around, according to Phil Pellitteri, University of Wisconsin Extension entomologist.

Although there are 55 mosquito species in Wisconsin, it's the Aedes Vexans variety that can really wreak havoc, Pellitteri said. If Aedes Vexans eggs get two weeks of standing water, 100 mosquitoes or more have the ability to hatch from one square foot of surface water.

“If it rains, they’re here,” said Pellitteri.

Also known as summer floodwater mosquitoes, the eggs of the mosquito can sit for three to four years, waiting for flood conditions to hatch.

“They can sit on the edge of a drainage ditch. Heavy rains with fluctuating water get us into trouble,” he said. “It takes about 10 days from when the eggs get flooded to when we’ll get a push of mosquitoes. That’s what makes this group problematic, as they can travel 15 to 20 miles from where they are breeding.”

With the past few summers being relatively dry, past mosquito populations have lagged a bit.

“I always blame it on the weather man,” Pellitteri joked. “If we get a three-inch downpour, something as innocent as a highway drainage ditch or culvert, those summer floodwater mosquitoes take advantage of the water, and there are no fish or other predators to mess with them, and they’re out of there before anyone eats them.”

And those pesky critters don’t stop there.

“Their eggs that can remain dormant, it doesn’t matter if it’s dry for a couple years either,” he said. “The eggs are not susceptible to winters, and those mosquitoes are capable of going 3 to 4 generations a year.”

To lessen the mosquito nuisance in your own yard, Pellitteri suggests cutting tall grass and trimming bushes to increase air flow and eliminate damp spots where the bugs like to hang out. A fan blowing near a patio or deck can also diminish the threat, because mosquitoes are not strong fliers.

“Deet has been a standby for repellents, it’s still a good product, but in addition there are a number of European products, including lemon oil, eucalyptus, and soybean oils of which I’ve seen a couple good tests,” Pellitteri said.

“What you’ll find looking at products is protection anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 or 4 hours, depending on the formula, and how active you are,” he said. “With those, mosquitoes get confused or repelled, but don’t bite you.”

Mosquitoes are also known carriers of the West Nile virus, which is spread by the bite of a mosquito. The first human infections of West Nile virus in Wisconsin were documented in 2002. Approximately 80 percent of people infected with West Nile virus do not become ill. Most of the remaining 20 percent of infected people may experience a mild illness that can present with fever, headache, eye pain, muscle aches, joint pain, a rash on the trunk, swollen lymph nodes, nausea and vomiting. Less than 1 percent of people infected will become severely ill.

“The less bites you get, the less risk you take,” he said. “When mosquitoes get bad, it’s good to use protection. I carry a mesh suit in my car, my hobbies and interests include being in swamps in summer, and I’ll use that rather than slather stuff on. For people who garden, it’s a definite alternative to consider.”"

Cudahy residents forced to leave their homes today while firefighters battled a huge fire at the Patrick Cudahy meatpacking plant can sleep in their own beds tonight.

Mayor Ryan McCue announced the evacuation order had been lifted as of 7 p.m., after extensive testing showed no dangerous anhydrous ammonia in the smoke and fumes wafting from outside the plant.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Smithfield Foods Inc. says its customers should not expect much of a disruption due to a fire at its Patrick Cudahy Inc. plant in the Milwaukee area.

The nation's largest hog producer and pork processor says in a statement Monday its other facilities have extra capacity to help with production.

The plant makes packaged meat products, like bacon, salami and ham, for retail and foodservice customers, such as restaurants and other commercial establishments.

Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield has been restructuring its operations and shuttering some plants to focus on its packaged meat business, which is more profitable than its hog business.

The plant has about 1,800 employees and ranks as one of Smithfield's larger plants.

Racial minorities serve on Brown County juries to a lesser degree than they exist in the population.

In the past eight years, juries have routinely contained a higher ratio of white people and a lower ratio of minorities compared with demographic estimates for the county.

An analysis of annual jury management reports by the Green Bay Press-Gazette shows the jury selection process becomes less representative of the overall population as it nears the courtroom.

The first pool of residents generated in the process almost perfectly reflects demographic estimates each year from the U.S. Census Bureau, but the concentration of white people increases at several steps toward a pool of sworn jurors.

The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly approved a historic energy bill on June 26 and the bill makes its way to the Senate later this month.

The comprehensive 1,400 page Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 marks the most aggressive energy bill ever passed by the U.S. House and faces a great deal of controversy and criticism. The Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 require the United States to reduce green house gas emissions 17 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by the end of the century. Measures are established in order to assist those industries impacted by a low carbon economy.

The reduction in green house gas emissions through the Clean Energy and Security Act will exceed President Obama’s goals of reducing emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020.

However, the environmental benefits are not the only gains taken into consideration with the passage of this bill. Through the creation of new energy sources an estimated 1.6 million domestic jobs may be created.

Congressman Steve Kagen says, “It provides $190 billion of investment in developing new sources of energy that are less carbon dioxide producing.""
Niner Online - Historic energy bill faces a tough road ahead

Congressman Kagen, wasn't the 787 billion to a trillion dollars you passed in the stimulus bill supposed to create jobs? Now you want to blow another $190 billion.

While the benefit to the environment and creation of new jobs sounds promising enough, critics argue that there are some serious costs not being properly considered. The EPA estimates that the average household will see an $80 - $110 per year increase to their energy bills. Businesses will also face an increase in operating costs, not only through an increase in energy costs but also in the newly required building codes that the bill requires.

Many critics fear that the increased expenses for businesses to operate may very well lead to staff layoffs.

The entire process of completing the Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 may be finished by the end of this year if the Senate approves the bill.

However, with such narrow margins in the House, passing this bill in the Senate could prove to be much more challenging.

Friday, spent the day with Mrs Berry Laker, what an angel God has blessed me with. We did a twelve mile bike trip.

Friday night, Nation wide race.

Saturday, another bike ride. Went to Suring to see if they held a Tea Party. I didn't see a time but took the camera anyway. No Party but I know there was a lot of GREAT Americans protesting across this country. Read about Wausau, Eagle River and more. Son # 2 in Gillett parade. He's the tall one.

Afternoon with Berry Laker mother and relatives. Played sheepshead and watched the cup race. Dog gone it, did Mark Martin have to go out on lap 14? What a finish, You got to feel for Kyle.

Sunday off to St. Casimir. Thanks Father Jim, good sermon and happy birthday. Watched a bad Brewer game and Tiger on his game. What a GRRRREAT golfer. Berry Laker son # 2 blows a rear tire on HWY 29. Thank God he kept the car under controll. That's one of my two GREAT boys.

Monday, woke up to hear about Patrick Cudahy. Thoughts and prayers are with everybody in Cudahy.

To you and yours, hope you had a GREAT weekend, I sure did.

Just want to make a couple comments on the fire at the Patrick Cudahy plant in Cudahy.

Our prayers go out to the company and all the people who work for Patrick Cudahy. For 120 years they have produced Wisconsin's great tasting products that made you proud to be from Wisconsin.

"Cudahy - Mayor Ryan McCue said a state of emergency has been declared as fire officials continue to battle a blaze at the Patrick Cudahy meatpacking plant.

Fire Chief Dan Mayer said ammonia in the plant that has caused concern throughout the day appears to be contained.

"We believe that's safe now inside," Mayer said. "From the ammonia standpoint, I'm cautiously optimistic that we have crossed the dangerous period.""

Our prayers also go out to the fire fighters and all the people battling the blaze and hope no one will be injured from this disaster.

I speak from being a former employee and look forward to the company getting through this hardship. Everyone involved with Patrick Cudahy were all professional and made everyone feel like family. What a group of GREAT people and GREAT products. This is only a set back and hope the future will be once again bright for all the people at Patrick Cudahy.
