May I Have Another Tax, Not Another Drink

Your savings are down. Your unemployment just ran out. Another plant shuts down in your area of Wisconsin. You feel down on your luck? It's been a bad week.

Maybe you want to have a drink during the Packer game, I guess not. Seems the democrats in Wisconsin and Jim Doyle want to increase a 58% tax on adult beverages. Nothing like kicking you again when your down. From the JSOnline.
"To help pay those costs, the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday recommended raising the tax on hard liquor 50 cents a liter. That would raise the tax 58%, from 85.86 cents per liter to almost $1.36." Senate panel backs liquor tax increase to pay for drunken driving bill - JSOnline
That tax increase would raise $25 million a year. Another $10 million a year would be raised by increasing a penalty on offenders from $20 to $163.

Let's not kid each other. It's a tax to pay for more welfare and more money to cover the state's budget deficit.
Sullivan and the other two Democrats on the committee, Lena Taylor of Milwaukee and Jon Erpenbach of Waunakee, voted for the measure. Republican Sens. Glenn Grothman of West Bend and Randy Hopper of Fond du Lac abstained, saying they were frustrated they weren't given copies of the bill until hours before the vote.

Won't even let everyone read the bill? Where did we hear that before?
Democrats control both houses of the Legislature, and Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle has called for tougher drunken driving laws. Legislators have focused on the issue after the Journal Sentinel's "Wasted in Wisconsin" series and reports by other news outlets on the toll of drunken driving.

Tougher drunken driving laws is code for we need more money for WEAC.
The tax would apply to hard liquor, but not beer, wine or cider. A small group of legislators have proposed raising the beer tax, but that idea has little support.

Can't have a beer tax yet, that will come in due time. Can't have Miller move out of Wisconsin just yet. Another tax and another tax, and another tax, may I please have another. How many more will you take?

Just in case you want to call two guys who are pushing this.
