More Organized Evil Tax Payers

Just like those evil tax payers in Pulaski, Shawano area residents voted "No" to tax hikes. Here's a quote, "Enough is enough,” he said. “People don’t want any more taxes and there are a lot of other things we have to do in the county.”

Shawano County voters Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a referendum to fund projected deficits at Maple Lane Health Care Center through additional increases in the tax levy over the next three years.

The measure was voted down by a margin of 2,998 against to 1,831 in favor.

The vote now puts the fate of the nursing home in the hands of the County Board, which could consider alternatives ranging from a sale of the facility to finding some other source of revenue, such as an assisted living program, to supplement it.

The only option ruled out by the County Board is an outright closure of the facility.

“The people have spoken,” said Shawano County Chairman Marshal Giese, who added he would be meeting with county staff and Chairman of the Maple Lane Board Marion Wnek this afternoon to discuss what’s next.

“We’ll move on and see what steps there are that need to be taken,” Giese said.

Giese said the county decided to go to referendum after seeing projected deficits rising much higher than previously projected.

“Enough is enough,” he said. “People don’t want any more taxes and there are a lot of other things we have to do in the county.”

More in today’s Leader."
