Some Brown County Jail inmates found a way to take advantage of phone software and make thousands of collect calls that were charged to local businesses and county offices, investigators say.

More than a dozen inmates may be involved and could face charges in the phone scam, Brown County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Sanborn said Friday.

The jail contracts with a private phone vendor, Inmate Calling Solutions, which has since fixed the software program, said Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken.

ICS could not be reached for comment Friday.

The largest bill charged was for $2,400. Calls were billed to five law offices and six county departments.
