State hides results of Internet tax
In December, as the state was about
to enact a $1 per pack increase in the cigarette tax, The Associated Press wanted to find out about efforts by the state to collect taxes on Internet cigarette sales, but it was rebuffed by the Department of Revenue.
So it's incredulous to hear state officials say Wisconsinites don't have a right to know how vigorously, or not, laws are being enforced. "Spectacularly lame," indeed."Spectacularly lame" was how Bill Lueders, president of the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, characterized the logic being offered by these state officials. "Just because the Department of Revenue is embarrassed that it's doing so little is not reason to hide that fact from the public."
What will happen if the state passes a no smoking law (except casino's). Will they look the other way for a couple years while people smoke in the bar? Where's the Tavern League? If you pass a law than enforce the law!
