A handful of local Democrats gathered Tuesday at the home of the new party chairman in Shawano County to watch President Barack Obama deliver his State of the Union address.

“I think all in all his speech went well,” said Leone Schneidewend, who was elected chairperson of the Shawano County Democratic Party last month.

Another of Schneidewend’s priorities is bolstering the Shawano County party’s sagging membership. At around two dozen paid members, it’s only half what it was in 2009.
