PSA North Woods, Wild Parsnips

Thought I would add some images for those who like me didn't know what it looked like.

"FLORENCE, Wis. - The UW Extension office in Florence County is encouraging residents to take steps to control wild parsnip, an invasive plant that can cause rash and blisters in humans.



Scott Reuss of the UW Extension said that the plant is currently in bloom.

Wild parsnip has an upside down, umbrella-shaped flower head with yellow flowers, and is found in a variety of soil types. Generally, the plant thrives where the water availability is fairly good.



There are many other plants in the parsnip family that are also in bloom right now, but wild parsnip is the only one with yellow flowers.

Wild parsnip has negative environmental characteristics, such as having the ability to crowd out some native wildflowers, but it is actually more problematic to humans than to the environment.



This plant contains a chemical that causes a severe rash and blistering when exposed to skin and sunlight."

Looks like the people on Berry Lake had a ton of fun.

"In just six months, the largest tax hikes in the history of America will take effect. They will hit families and small businesses in three great waves on January 1, 2011:

First Wave: Expiration of 2001 and 2003 Tax Relief

In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for investors, small business owners, and families. These will all expire on January 1, 2011:

Personal income tax rates will rise. The top income tax rate will rise from 35 to 39.6 percent (this is also the rate at which two-thirds of small business profits are taxed). The lowest rate will rise from 10 to 15 percent. All the rates in between will also rise. Itemized deductions and personal exemptions will again phase out, which has the same mathematical effect as higher marginal tax rates. The full list of marginal rate hikes is below:

- The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
- The 25% bracket rises to 28%
- The 28% bracket rises to 31%
- The 33% bracket rises to 36%
- The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%

Higher taxes on marriage and family. The “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income. The child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child. The standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The dependent care and adoption tax credits will be cut.

The return of the Death Tax. This year, there is no death tax. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there is a 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million. A person leaving behind two homes and a retirement account could easily pass along a death tax bill to their loved ones.

Higher tax rates on savers and investors. The capital gains tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 20 percent in 2011. The dividends tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 39.6 percent in 2011. These rates will rise another 3.8 percent in 2013.

Second Wave: Obamacare

There are over twenty new or higher taxes in Obamacare. Several will first go into effect on January 1, 2011. They include:

The “Medicine Cabinet Tax” Thanks to Obamacare, Americans will no longer be able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin).

The “Special Needs Kids Tax” This provision of Obamacare imposes a cap on flexible spending accounts (FSAs) of $2500 (Currently, there is no federal government limit). There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children. There are thousands of families with special needs children in the United States, and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education. Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington, D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education.

The HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision of Obamacare increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.

Third Wave: The Alternative Minimum Tax and Employer Tax Hikes

When Americans prepare to file their tax returns in January of 2011, they’ll be in for a nasty surprise—the AMT won’t be held harmless, and many tax relief provisions will have expired. The major items include:

The AMT will ensnare over 28 million families, up from 4 million last year. According to the left-leaning Tax Policy Center, Congress’ failure to index the AMT will lead to an explosion of AMT taxpaying families—rising from 4 million last year to 28.5 million. These families will have to calculate their tax burdens twice, and pay taxes at the higher level. The AMT was created in 1969 to ensnare a handful of taxpayers."

The Labor Department says new claims for jobless benefits jumped by 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 472,000. Analysts expected a small drop, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.

Greater layoffs by construction firms contributed to the increase, a Labor Department analyst said. Home sales slumped last month after the expiration of a popular homebuyer tax credit. Summer layoffs in many school districts also added to the total.

The number of people continuing to claim benefits rose by 43,000 to 4.6 million, the department said. But the number of people collecting extended benefits fell by 376,000, as lawmakers have refused to continue the extra aid."

Members of the United Steel Workers Union from NewPage picket Wednesday in a local neighborhood to show their frustration with the lack of a fair labor agreement . The union contract expired more than two years ago.

ESCANABA -A group of union employees from NewPage displayed their frustration on the lack of a fair contract agreement and picketed with signs in front of a boss' home Wednesday.

About 40 members of United Steel Workers Union Local 2-21 carried signs reading "Labor Dispute" in front of the Lake Bluff home of mill manager Mike Entz. The employees' labor pact expired in June 2008 and negotiations have failed to reach a settlement.

"We're beyond two years for a labor contract," said union team leader Jim Sivertsen on the picket line. "Negotiations have been slow and mostly unproductive.""

The economy is bad, unemployment is high and these people in Escanaba are picketing. Did the picketers remeber what New Page did to Niagara and the Fox Valley mills? Are they looking for New Page to shut down the plant?

Keep contributing your dues to democrats and your union leaders and you will see in the future what you will get. For the last two years companies do not know what the Obama administration will do to them and the rank and file think they will get a contract done to their benefit?

I do not know all the issues in Escanaba but the workers in Escanaba are in the same boat as the rest of America. We're all scared of the future and the dems are in charge. We're scared. we're worried and we're mad as heck about our future.

These bags may be friendly to the environment, but not necessarily to you, according to a new report by researchers at two universities.

This reminds me of Milwaukee residents didn't use enough water and the water department says it has to raise rates.

The research study – which randomly tested reusable grocery bags carried by shoppers in Tucson, Los Angeles and San Francisco – also found consumers were almost completely unaware of the need to regularly wash their bags.

"Our findings suggest a serious threat to public health, especially from coliform bacteria including E. coli, which were detected in half of the bags sampled," said Charles Gerba, a UA professor of soil, water and environmental science and co-author of the study. "Furthermore, consumers are alarmingly unaware of these risks and the critical need to sanitize their bags on a weekly basis."

So now you have to waste water and soap to sanitize your grocery bags.
