Madison — Fifty one percent of students in a UW System survey told researchers that they had a binge drinking episode within the two previous weeks, a number that gives the researchers "guarded optimism" that efforts to stem dangerous drinking and drug use might be working.
The researchers warn that part of the change might be because they tweaked the wording of the questions they asked students this year. Most notably, they used to define a drinking binge as having five drinks "in one sitting." This year, they defined a binge as having the drinks in a two-hour period.
Also for female students, they reduced the number of drinks that they considered as a binge. They kept it as five in the two-hour period for men, but dropped it to four for women."
