Vukmir to challenge Sullivan for Senate seat

Jun. 25, 2009 11:34 a.m. | Madison — Rep. Leah Vukmir (R-Wauwatosa) said Thursday she plans to challenge first-term Sen. Jim Sullivan (D-Wauwatosa) in next fall's election.
Vukmir, who was elected in 2002, announced her candidacy in Wauwatosa and said she would be a senator who better represents the district's priorities. Vukmir, 51, a registered nurse, said she had a record of progress on job creation, tax relief, education reform and health care reform.
"When the economy soured, some politicians in Madison were concerned only with how to raise enough tax revenue to fund their spending addiction," Vukmir said in a statement. "My priority has been, and will always be, creating jobs and providing core services in the most efficient way possible."
Sullivan, 41, an attorney, beat former Sen. Tom Reynolds (R-West Allis) to win the seat in 2006. He was the only Democrat to vote against the budget in the Senate last week and is the target of a recall effort triggered by his vote for a statewide smoking ban.
In a statement, Sullivan said he has tried to be an independent voice for the district, working to create jobs in the biotechnology and medical sectors, supporting small businesses and improving public safety. »Read Full Article"
