More water bodies frozen over, according to Sheriff’s Department
By Leader Staff Writer
On Thursday, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department released additional information on ice conditions in the area.
Washington, Loon, White Clay, Upper and Lower Red Lakes were completely ice covered. The Cloverleaf Lake chain had open water in a half acre area in the center of Pine Lake and the southwest shoreline of Round Lake.
Grass Lake is completely iced over.
Shawano Lake is completely covered with ice. There are several pressure cracks on the north and western half of the lake.
Please be aware of the common danger areas near the Shawano Airport and the channel into Washington lake.
The Wolf River is also iced over north of the County Road MMM bridge to well north of the railroad bridge.
The department recommends fishermen exercise extreme caution venturing out during early ice conditions. Be sure to take safety equipment and a cell phone.
“Should you fall through the ice, try not to panic. The initial cold shock to your body will last 1 to 3 minutes,” Deputy Chris Gamm wrote in an email. “If you hyperventilate, your risk of dying is much higher. Work to slow your breathing and assess your situation. Once your breathing is under control, move to the edge of the hole and work to get your hands and elbows on the edge of the ice. Once set, kick your legs to become horizontal in the water, and pull yourself onto the ice. Roll away from the hole to prevent falling back in.”
The following is a link to a video showing an expert on hypothermia saving himself after falling through the ice: http://www.exn.ca/news/video/exn2002/03/25/exn20020325-icewater.asx. The link will be posted on the Shawano County web site, along with lake photos from the flyover.
