ZIP LOCK BAG - Good tip!

We went with friends to Sweety Pies on Sunday for breakfast and sat in the patio section beside the house. We happened to notice zip lock baggies pinned to a post and a wall. The bags were half filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut. Naturally we were curious! Ms. Sweety told us that these baggies kept the flies away! So naturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again. And there were no flies in the eating area! This morning I checked this out on Google. Below are comments on this fly control idea. I'm now a believer!


Zip-lock water bags

I tried the ziplock bag and pennies this weekend.. I have a horse trailer. The flies were bad while I was camping. I put the baggie with pennies above the door of the LQ. NOT ONE FLY came in the trailer. The horse trailer part had many. Not sure why it works but it does!

Fill a ziplock bag with water and 5 or 6 pennies and hang it in the problem area. In my case it was a particular window in my home. It had a slight passage way for insects. Every since I have done that, it has kept flies and wasps away. Some say that wasps and flies mistake the bag for some other insect nest and are threatened.

I swear by the plastic bag of water trick. I have them on porch and basement. We saw these in Northeast Mo. at an Amish grocery store & have used them since. They say it works because a fly sees a reflection & won't come around.

Regarding the science behind zip log bags of water? My research found that the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being around that much perceived action. I moved to a rural area and thought these "hillbillies" were just yanking my city boy chain but I tried it and it worked immediately! We went from hundreds of flies to seeing the occasional one, but he didn't hang around long.

ESCANABA - The Tea (Taxed Enough Already) Party Express held a rally in Escanaba's Ludington Park Friday, where around 500 residents turned out to hear what was being said.

Citing the need for a return to smaller government and constitutional ideals, most people in attendance Friday agreed with the message being delivered.

Several people in attendance carried flags expressing their frustrations, including several that read "Don't Tread on Me," - a flag popular during the Revolutionary War."

ESCANABA - The announcement Friday by Congressman Bart Stupak that he was not seeking re-election was greeted enthusiastically by people attending the Tea Party rally in Ludington Park.

Bill Isetts Sr., of Escanaba, who was present for the rally, said he supported what the grassroots organization stood for.

"Enough is enough already," said Isetts. "The current health care legislation stinks.It's as phony as a $3 bill."

Isetts also said as the government continues to take more and more money, it is becoming ridiculous and no one in Washington is listening."

ESCANABA - Many were shocked to learn of Congressman Bart Stupak's decision to retire, an announcement he made Friday. Local residents shared their reactions - which included disappointment, sadness and understanding - to the news that the man who had represented the Upper Peninsula for 18 years would step down.

Several local residents said they would be sorry to see Stupak vacate his seat. Many felt he represented the Upper Peninsula well and worked hard for the well-being of his constituents.

"I hate to see him step down because he's done a lot for Michigan," said Peg Bartol, Escanaba. "With his wisdom and knowledge of our area, it's sad to see him step down.""

That's because the 2008 GOP presidential hopeful elected to skip the conference to continue his book tour.

Romney triumphed by a single vote over Ron Paul, who took second place 439 votes to 438. Both men won 24 percent of the vote. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18 percent of the vote each.

1,806 ballots were cast by the conservative activists who attended the conference. No other candidate got more than four percent of the vote."

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), who had a central role in the health reform fight as the leader of anti-abortion Democrats, plans to announce Friday that he will not run for reelection, a Democratic official said. Without Stupak on the ballot, the seat becomes an immediate pickup opportunity for Republicans.

"Now with health care done, he’s retiring," a friend said. "He has thought about retiring for the last three cycles, but was always talked into staying: to elect John Kerry to help end the war, to elect a Democratic majority to get health care done."

President Barack Obama called Stupak on Wednesday and asked him not to retire. Stupak, 58, also resisted entreaties from Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), the dean of the Wolverine State delegation.

We need to work on the rest to retire. Steve Kagen, Kind, Baldwin, Obey, Moore, Feingold and all the rest of the democrats across this country who need to go. Retirement or vote the bums out.

"TRAVERSE CITY (AP) - The two top-ranking Democrats in the U.S. House fear Rep. Bart Stupak may retire after drawing fierce criticism during the health care debate and have urged him to seek re-election, two congressional aides told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer phoned Stupak recently and encouraged the Michigan Democrat to run for a 10th term, said Democratic House leadership aides who spoke on condition of anonymity. ESCANABA - The Tea Party Express is preparing for a series of rallies in Michigan, including Escanaba, aimed at unseating U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak because of his last-minute vote in favor of the health care overhaul.

The Tea Party Express III: Just Vote Them Out! Tour will make a stop in Escanaba Friday - one of five stops in the state's First Congressional District and one of 10 in Michigan.

The event will take place at the Karas Memorial Band Shell in Ludington Park. There will be local speakers at 11 a.m., and the tour bus will arrive at noon for the rally.

Dan Benishek, a Republican candidate seeking the District 1 seat in the U.S. House now held by Stupak, will also be in attendance at the Escanaba rally. He will share the stage with Tea Party activists and other candidates running against Bart Stupak. Benishek will also attend rallies in Sault Ste. Marie, Cheboygan and Petoskey.

A Tea Party spokesman says Stupak is the Tea Party Express' top target for defeat after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. The group began a $250,000 television and radio campaign targeting Stupak on Wednesday.

Stupak led a group of Democrats who withheld support for the health care bill until reaching a compromise with the White House over abortion funding.

The Tea Party Express III: Just Vote Them Out! Tour started March 17 and has since taken its message across the nation.

Following the stop in Escanaba, the tour will head to the Bud Weber Park I in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, arriving at 6 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the bus will make a stop in Cheyboygan at 8 a.m. at Washington Park in downtown, then arrive in Petoskey at 10:30 a.m. at the Emmet-Charlevoix County Fairgrounds. At 11 a.m., the tour will arrive in Traverse City, then make a stop in Big Rapids at 2:45 p.m. The next stop will be in Grand Rapids at 4 p.m., and then Lansing at 7:15 p.m.

Steve Kagen Can't Hide Anymore

Visitors shift attention at seniors’ meeting with Kagen

What was intended as a low-key chat with seniors about health care Wednesday turned instead into a civil, but sometimes contentious, debate between U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen and skeptical members of the public.

The meeting at the Shawano Senior Center was attended by about half a dozen senior citizens expecting a quiet sit-down with Kagen, but they were soon outnumbered by a mostly younger set of visitors who dominated the hour-long question and answer session.

Kagen initially sat down at a table to talk with the seniors, but the other visitors complained they couldn’t hear him.

So Kagen ignores people who come to his meetings.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore anybody, but I was here to meet with the senior citizens, and it looked to me like you were younger than the age group I had in mind,” Kagen said.

Nevertheless, Kagen took a microphone to address all the attendees, talking about what he said were benefits in the new health care reform law for senior citizens and small business owners.

Kagen said the new law provides “a great deal of reassurance for seniors,” particularly in starting to close the gap in Medicare Part D coverage often called “the donut hole.” He said over time the gap would be closed completely.

Kagen also noted free preventive medical tests would soon be available under Medicare, with no out-of-pocket co-payments or deductibles for preventive services.

The new law will also allow children to stay on a family’s insurance plan until they turn 26 years old, and insurers would be prevented from dropping a family’s coverage if a family member became ill.

Kagen also sought to clear up some of the misinformation surrounding the law, saying patients would still be able to go to their own physician and the hospital of their choice.

Other highlights of the new law cited by Kagen included a ban on insurance company discrimination due to pre-existing conditions; small business tax credits of up to 35 percent for the cost of insurance; a standard benefit plan all health insurers must offer; and no annual or lifetime caps on insurance coverage.

But the first question Kagen faced from the visitors — and one which would recur repeatedly during the hour — came from John Schreiner of Shawano.

“How is this going to be paid for?” Schreiner asked.

Good question John.

Kagen said there would be tax increases for single taxpayers making more than $200,000 a year and couples making more than $250,000 a year.

He also said there were 512 households in the 8th District he represents making more than $1 million a year — and they would pay an additional $6,000 to $7,000.

Referring to tax cuts under the Bush Administration, Kagen said, “the wealthy have had a tax holiday.”

He said additional revenue would come in through “finding efficiencies and eliminated waste, particularly in Medicare.”

But the notion of higher taxes — even those aimed at the wealthy — did not sit well with some of the visitors.

Blah, blah, blah, Answers with non answers. Puppet Steve Kagen giving his talking points from Nancy Pelosi. Tax the rich, funny the middle class will end up paying for this.

Schreiner left the meeting at that point, telling Kagen, “I hope you have your resume ready.”

Also bothered by the notion was Lisa Hoffman, an unsuccessful candidate in Tuesday’s election for the Shawano School District Board of Education.

She called the tax increases “redistribution of wealth” at odds with the capitalistic marketplace Kagen claimed to want to create in the health care industry.

“The wealthy’s fair share should be what everybody else pays,” Hoffman said. “I don’t think because you’ve been successful in this country, you should pay more taxes.”

Hoffman said the government had no Constitutional right to mandate what anyone’s health care should be and said it was not the government’s job to fix the broken health care system.

You go Lisa, give em hell!

Dr. T. L. Christen, who had joined the seniors at their table for the meeting with Kagen, spoke up at this point, clearly frustrated with the comments she had been hearing.

“I’ve been sitting here and listening and I’ve got to say something for the seniors,” she said. “I represent a lot of seniors.”

Christen said the health care system is broken and the new law, while not perfect, begins to address those problems.

“For the first time, this is a start,” she said. “I’ve heard all the criticisms, but I haven’t heard one positive thing said. Have you actually read what’s in this? Our seniors have. Our seniors before this happened were angry, and they felt cheated by the American public, they felt cheated by the government. They felt they had been left out. And they were mad.”

Holy cow, Dr. Christen read the bill? Did anyone ask Kagen if he read itl? Let's be honest here Christen and Kagen didn't read the bill, do they take the people of Shawano for a bunch of fools? Was it coincidence Dr Christen was at the meeting, don't think so. Kagen must of promised her a government job? Left wing medical doctor, geeeeeezzzzz.

Christen said there was still more work to do on the law and she hoped the younger visitors would help make it better.

“There’s a lot of work that has to be done and I hope you young people will get in there and start fighting,” she said. “We seniors have been fighting and no one has listened to us for 10 long years. We’re living in a world today where you have to start thinking positive, not negative. We’ve done that for too long.”

There you go, right out of the lefts playbook. it's was Bush's fault and you young people who will pay for this, just SHUT UP and leave Dr Kagen alone. I'm with John, “I hope you have your resume ready.”

Green Bay officials are investigating two incidents of suspected voter fraud in which people voted in today’s election under other people’s names.

City Clerk Chad Weininger said police were examining video that might show one of the suspects inside a polling place.

Weininger said such misconduct is unusual in Green Bay elections.

“This is actually very rare for Green Bay,” he said.

The first incident occurred at St. Peter and Paul Church, 1420 Harvey St., and the second was at Danz Elementary School, 2130 Basten St.

In both cases, Weininger said, the real voter showed up later only to discover that clerks believed he or she had voted already. “The poll worker is like,

‘You already voted,’” he said. “And the person was like, ‘I couldn’t have voted, because I am who I am.’”

Is it rare because no has been caught or has vote officials have been looking the other way about voter fraud.

MADISON — The director of the Wisconsin Covenant program acknowledged Monday she's heard from "a lot of parents" who believed it would give their children a free ride to college, but insisted that was never the intent."

Gov. Jim Doyle proposed the Covenant in 2006 to motivate students to attend college and help them afford it. He promised "the neediest families will receive grants to pay the costs of education" and others would receive a mix of loans, grants and work study opportunities.

"As long as the student holds up his or her end of the bargain, every family that qualifies for financial aid will get a package that fully covers their tuition," he said at the time.

While more than 50,000 students signed the Covenant in the last three years, the governor did not release details of the financial aid component until earlier this month.

He has proposed giving grants worth $2,500 to students with family incomes of roughly $25,000 or less; $1,500 grants to those from families earning roughly $40,000; and $1,000 to those from families that make up to $80,000. All others would receive $250 grants for completing the program.

Students would be guaranteed grants for their first two years of college. Doyle has said they will be eligible for additional grants in their final two years, but their size will depend on the availability of funding.

Republicans have accused Doyle, a Democrat, of letting down students and their families who were expecting more while acknowledging the state's budget doesn't leave room for more generous benefits.

Sharon Billings, who runs a service with her husband that helps parents plan for their children's higher education, testified Monday that she's heard from parents upset about the size of the state grants.

The "word on the street" was that students would get a full ride for fulfilling the Covenant requirements, Billings said. She called the size of the grants insulting., and "not even enough to buy a few books."



"I think it's a travesty of justice for students who have done their part," she said. "I don't think it's fair to them ... If we promise students we are going to do something, then we should follow through."

Covenant Director Shannon Loredo responded that she had heard from a lot of parents with similar comments, but the Covenant "was never intended to be the only piece." She said Covenant scholars will receive other forms of state and federal aid.

Indeed, Doyle's office estimates that Covenant scholars from families with annual incomes of less than $25,000 will receive financial aid packages of $11,000, including the federal Pell Grant and the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant. That is more than the cost of tuition for one year in the UW System, Doyle noted earlier this month.

UW System spokesman David Giroux said Billings' comments reflected the confusion about the program's potential benefits that had lingered since its inception. But he said regardless of what students were expecting, the focus should now be on whether the grants help change behavior during high school so they better prepare for college.

"I've got to believe that it will," he said, calling a potential $2,500 grant "a very significant motivating factor."

After Monday's hearing, Doyle's administration is expected to submit a final proposal to the Legislature in coming weeks with minor changes in wording. Legislative committees will have time to review the plan, and if they don't object, it will become final.

GREEN BAY — I could not help but notice that Steve Kagen's facial expressions said it all. He looked like a child when a parent catches them in a lie. He will have to look at himself in the mirror every day knowing he voted against the very people who sent him to office, spit on the Constitution and made his oath worthless.

Ultimately we have the power at the polls to remove him from office, but once he is removed he will take to his grave the knowledge that he voted to destroy the last true country where freedom exists. Shame on him and shame on us for electing him to represent us in this great representative republic. It is too bad that he and fellow Democrats don't walk what they talk and they will continue to get re-elected. I hope and pray that we as a community will remember what he did this November and throw him out of office.

Pat Sajak And A Berry Laker Moment

It was the beginning of October in 1985. I was taking the future Mrs B out for dinner and was to meet her parents and her two brothers and their wives for the first time. JFYI, I was a single dad at the time. The reason I bring this up is we went to the "Pipe Bar" in Pipe Wis, the bar Mrs B's parents owned at the time.

On that night we set up a sitter for my daughter. The two things I will never forget about that night is as we came in to drop off my daughter, Pat Sajak and Vanna were on Wheel of fortune and the other unforgettable moment, my mother in law, "Jacks" God bless her soul ( miss you mom) told me I must be someone special. I had the record for dating their daughter the longest. It turned out to be a night I will never forget.

Frank Rich spent many years as the theater critic for the New York Times, where, at worst, his venom could cause a Broadway production or two to close down.

Now, however, Mr. Rich opines on political and social issues for the Times, and, while the results are usually mildly amusing (even if unintentionally so), his reach has grown a bit, so the damage he causes can travel beyond the footlights. I’m not sure why anyone turns to Rich for political analysis—heck, you might as well read the rantings of a TV game show host—but the Gray Lady continues to pay him for his weekly column, and, at the rate she’s bleeding money, that’s no small sacrifice.

Anyway, Mr. Rich has apparently been able to get to the bottom of the vocal opposition to the “healthcare reform” bill that was recently gently shepherded through Congress." Conservative News: Sajak - Opposed to Obamacare? Then You Must Be A Racist - HUMAN EVENTS

It turns out, according to his well-crafted analysis, that it’s not the bill that’s got people in an uproar; rather, what we’re facing is the death rattle of a dwindling cadre of white, racist, sexist, homophobic males terrified by the ascent of people of color, women and gays.

As the ever-tolerant Rich reasons: “The conjunction of a black President and a female speaker of the House — topped off by a wise Latina on the Supreme Court and a powerful gay congressional committee chairman — would sow fears of disenfranchisement among a dwindling and threatened minority in the country no matter what policies were in play.”

So that’s it. It’s just a bunch of scared, white males who would yelp about anything this gang came up with. As Rich makes clear, this is merely a replay of the opposition to the Voting Rights Act of 1964. You get it? If you express opposition to the bill, you’re a racist, sexist homophobe.

Mr. Rich is shocked by the level of anger in the land, and he fears for the safety of our elected officials, much as I’m sure he did during the George W. Bush administration. He calls on Republican leaders to distance themselves from the more radical voices among them, echoing the demands I’m sure he made of the Democrats during the last campaign.

Welcome to post-racial America, where those who oppose a piece of legislation must defend themselves against the scurrilous charges of a man who seems much better suited to reviewing “Cats”. (He liked it, by the way.) This was a particularly shameful column, and the millions of Americans who oppose this legislation are owed an apology. Are they right? Are they wrong? Let’s discuss it. Let’s debate it. Let’s yell and scream if we want to. But would it be too much to ask that we approach the matter based on its merits and leave the psychobabble to Dr. Phil?

Allison Schumacher had no trouble getting the motorcycle to an upright position at the Ladies Garage Party at Doc’s Harley Davidson east of Bonduel.

“It really gives those girls confidence,” said Steve “Doc” Hopkins, owner of Doc’s Harley Davidson and sponsor of the Wolf River HOG chapter.

The garage party, which attracted several women for snacks and fun, is just one of the many activities Hopkins has used to grow from a small building on Richmond Street in Shawano to a now sprawling complex of buildings just east of Bonduel.

Hopkins moved the business in April 1998, because Harley-Davidson wants its dealers to be located on a major highway. The move has been successful.

“It was a good one,” he said of the location."

If you head west on HWY 29 out of Green Bay, you need to stop and say hello. I never owned a Harley, let alone a bike, never was to Doc's Harley Davidson's or ever meet Doc himself but from what I hear in those parts, it's well worth the stop to Doc's Harley Davidson's.

State Rep. Thomas Nelson, D-Kaukauna, will hold a listening session from 11:30 a.m. to noon Monday at Grand Central Shell Station, 2597 W. Mason St., Green Bay.

Constituents with questions are encouraged to attend to voice their opinions and raise concerns.

Nelson will visit four other sites on Monday throughout the 5th Assembly District, including:
