Critics say 2010 census is unconstitutional
Illegal immigrants to be officially counted for the first time

Every 10 years, the federal government undertakes a constitutionally mandated count of the American population to determine the apportionment of elected representatives among the 50 states, and, given the political stakes, it has always been a lodestone for controversy.

In recent decades, the blasts and the blows have been mostly about the counting - or undercounting, as the case may be - of minorities. The squalls this year are blowing in from three different directions, and two of them are based on constitutional complaints.

First fury up, a charge that President Barack Obama has made a power grab by transferring oversight of the 2010 census from the Department of Commerce to the White House, a move critics contend is not only politically motivated but unconstitutional.

The constitution, they say, gives Congress the power to delegate the duties and responsibilities of the census by law, and it has done so to the Department of Commerce, not to the White House." Critics say 2010 census is unconstitutional

What will happen in Wisconsin?
The inflated official count would give states with high illegal immigrant populations a big advantage in the next congressional reapportionment. The big winners could be states such as California - which could gain as many as nine seats, from 48 to 57 - Texas and Florida, while states such as Ohio, Louisiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania stand to lose seats.

If the dems are in charge, could you really say Petri in the 6th, Ryan in the 1st, and Sensenbrenner in the 5th are safe seats after the upcoming census?

Ryan & Sensenbrenner yes - past election results likely bare that out as they have overwhelmingly won.

Petri - first it depends if he runs. Dems haven't really run anyone against him, sort of like the Republicans and Kohl. 2010 could be different.

If he doesn't run that seat could be wide open depending on who would throw their hat in.

For the 6th I'd be curious what Kevin over at Lakeshore Laments thinks.

Brad, anything can happen with the left, with voter fraud, census fraud however they try to play their games.

Thanks for the comment and have a Great week.

That is true.

However I think the listening sessions this last month show the left could be in trouble - if voters remember come next November.

Remember though any effect of the census wouldn't be seen until 2012 if Wisconsin were to lose any seats. By then the Dems may not have the control needed to re-draw the districts in a way to unseat either Ryan or Sensenbrenner.

The problem the left has with these three seats (or at least the 1st and the 5th) continues to be not having formidable candidates.

But we will see.
