Firstwatch: What's ahead in the news today
Ni hao, Milwaukee.That's "hello" in Chinese, which is fitting, because for the next 12 days Gov. Jim Doyle and a host of state officials and business leaders will be in China for a trade mission designed to bring business to state companies.Of course, in China, it's already tomorrow. Or quite possibly yesterday. Hard to tell the way the globe keeps spinning so fast. But if it's already tomorrow, then to someone in China today's soon-to-be news is already yesterday's old news, right?Wait. That may be wrong.In any case, here's what is on tap today in our little corner of the Western Hemisphere.Former Milwaukee police officer Joseph Stromei, who pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice after admitting to investigators that he had lied about what he had seen the night Frank Jude was beaten, is to be sentenced today.Firefighters from across the region will compete in the Midwest Regional Firefighter Challenge, which sounds like it should be a TV reality show. The event, today and tomorrow at Konkel Park in Greenfield, includes a series of competitions. For instance, wearing full bunker gear, pairs of competitors race through a series of tasks, including climbing a five-story tower, chopping, dragging hoses and a rescuing a life-sized victim.At the multiplex, three of the four new movies opening today have one thing in common: lots of shooting. One is even called, appropriately enough, "Shoot 'Em Up." That one is a live-action cartoon starring Clive Owen as a mystery man who gets involved in a shooting war when he decides to save a baby being targeted for assassination. There is also "No End in Sight," an extensively reported documentary that explores the war in Iraq, and finds a lot to be gloomy about. And "3:10 to Yuma" is a dark, violent remake of a 1950s Western starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.The odd movie out is "The Brothers Solomon," a broad comedy starring "Arrested Development's" Will Arnett and "Saturday Night Live's" Will Forte as two dimwitted brothers on a mission to give their father a grandchild. The City of Festival's final festival of the summer kicks off today at the lakefront. It's the Indian Summer Festival and it opens at 4 today and runs all weekend.In sports .... well, before we get to sports, let's pause for a moment to remember that on this date in 1979, the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network made it's cable TV debut. That's ESPN, of course.Should be a holiday, don't ya think?Around here, it might as well be, with the Brewers and Packers both playing meaningful games on the same weekend. (When's the last time that happened?). The Brewers are on the road, where they will be for 13 of the next 16 games, to open a series in Cincinnati. They're tied for first again, after Chicago's loss yesterday.The Packers, meanwhile, open what should be a record-breaking year for quarterback Brett Favre with a game Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. They're at (insert deep, booming voice here) Lambeau Field. If that's not enough, there's a full slate of prep football games tonight.
