Ontonagon mill purchased for scrap

ONTONAGON -- The president of a large Canadian company which deals with selling and buying scrap metal indicated Monday the corporation is purchasing the closed Smurfit Stone Mill in Ontonagon. The village of Ontonagon, however, agreed to appeal to Smurfit Stone not to sell to anyone who will tear the mill down.

American Iron and Metal Inc. of Montreal President Herbert Black told The Daily Globe that it made the deal to buy the mill this past weekend. Black said that since the agreement to buy was just made a few days ago and it has no timeline set for the demolition but that the power plant at the mill is "definitely for sale as it is an asset to the community." On the timeline for the demolition work, he said he expected it would be done "sometime this year." "
